Menopause starts when you stop having your monthly cycle. This also signifies that you can no longer bear a child. Usually this occurs at the age of 48-54 years. This can make a woman’s life uncomfortable since the hormonal imbalances cause many physical as well as emotional changes. The menopause time frame differs from 2-10 years. Besides the changes in your body and reproductive system, other menopausal symptoms that you may notice are difficulty in sleeping, mood swings and hot flashes to name a few. These problems are usually the cause of the fluctuations in hormone levels that a woman goes through during menopause.

The first sign you will encounter is a change in your period. You menstrual flow becomes lighter or heavier and the length of your cycle changes also. If before, your average cycle is 28 days, during menopause, you might not have your next period for 35, 54 or not even 90 days after your last period.
Tip #3: Hot flashes are usual.
Hot flashes are the most common menopausal symptoms. This is the feeling wherein you can feel a sudden flush of heat that rushes over your body and this can happen for 3 minutes up to one hour. There are cases in which the skin will flush during hot flashes as the blood vessels dilate to cool down the skin. This is very uncomfortable that’s why it is best recommended to dress in layers so that you can easily remove some to accommodate the fluctuating body temperatures. Hot flashes normally last until the hormone stabilizes again.
Tip #4: Mood swings may also be apparent.
You will experience hormonal imbalance during menopause. This causes some changes in your attitude. You will find yourself laughing in a minute then cry the next minute or be angry the next time. This makes you unpredictable and it’s not your fault. After menopause, you can be back to your old self again. Stress-relieving activities can help you fight these emotions.
Tip #5: Note of sleep disturbances.
Due to disturbances in the body temperature, you can have problems in sleeping. Hot flashes can cause night sweats which also causes insomnia. Mood swings and the fear of aging can also affect your sleeping habits.
Tip #6: There is also weight gain/fluid retention
Another sign of menopause is weight gain due to water retention. Hormonal imbalance in the body results to body cell’s disorder which causes you to retain water and gain weight.
As soon as you notice some signs of menopause, be ready for some other changes that will affect your body. You can easily gain weight as your metabolism slows down. So as to maintain your normal weight, you have to reduce your calorie intake as many as 400 calories a day. You must know that after menopause, you are at risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. You will also suffer from urinary incontinence because of the changes in the elasticity of the urethra.
