Menopause or sometimes referred as “The Change of Life” is when a woman stops having her menstrual period and her fertility stops too. According to the staff of Mayo Clinic, the usual age for a woman to reach menopause in the United States is 51. When a woman experiences not having her monthly period for 12 consecutive months then she reached the menopausal stage. There are several symptoms which may occur during this period. If your mom is near the menopausal age maybe you will notice some changes concerning her health and wellbeing. Maybe you are wondering if she has reached “the change of life?” Here is how you can say she is indeed going through menopause.
Tip # 1: Facial flushing
Known as a physical change in women and menopause, the hormonal changes that a menopausal woman may experience can cause sudden warmth which is called “hot flashes.” This causes spontaneous reddening of the face.
Tip #2: Weight gain
Also a physical change, you will notice your mom going through menopause with this sign. There is an increased appetite and at the same time a drop in metabolism which may then cause weight gain which increases abdominal fat also.
Tip #3: Hair loss
During menopause there is also a thyroid change that may occur. Thyroid malfunction causes thinning of hair.
Tip #4: Depression
A drop in estrogen level may occur during menopause and this will cause your mother to feel some level of despair or hopelessness. It is because their capability of bearing a child had stopped making them feel sad that they are already inadequate.
Tip #5: Mood swings
Also, hormonal imbalances cause mood swings at the time of menopause. They will also experience night time hot flashes causing them not to sleep well at night. Fatigue is the common cause of mood swings.
Tip #6: Anxiety
This menopausal anxiety can cause your mother to act nervously. She has also the feeling of anxiousness having the lack of control of her body as she reaches the change of life.
Tip # 7: Forgetfulness
Some factors that can cause memory loss during menopause are hormonal changes, lack of sleep, and drop in estrogen levels. Maybe there are times that you may notice your mom forgetting small things like her purse or keys. She also gets a hard time completing her sentence because she forgot the proper word to use.
Tip #8: Confusion
Confusion is often associated with aging and senility, and it is also a very distressing symptom of menopause. Besides simple forgetfulness, confusion can also impair judgment and increase anxiety.
Tip #9: Irritability
Irritability may be the worst symptom in women with menopause. You can notice that your mother easily loses her patience. Before she knows it she had snapped a person because she suddenly lost her temper.
You can consult your own doctor and let him explain to make you understand why your mom is going through menopause. Although it is so natural to be thoughtful about your mom’s health, give her privacy and discuss menopause in the most proper way. Try to encourage your mother to visit her doctor to discuss about the symptoms of menopause since they are also symptoms of other diseases.
